Over the years we have Dell stand atop of the computer industry by continuing to churn out quality electronic/digital products such as cameras, monitors, printers, televisions, computers, etc. It was only a matter of time before they entered the world of mobile communications, and they have finally announced it. Dell has released information regarding the Android-based Mini 3 smart phone that will soon be available to Brazil and China consumers.
There is an over abundance of smart phones on the consumer market today so only time will tell if the trusted name of Dell can bring them above the rest. Since there is a large mountain to climb with names like LG, Samsung, and Blackberry they certainly have their work cut out for them. However, this leap into the smart phone pool was necessary for Dell to make their staple in the advancements of mobile communications – much like what Apple has done with the iPhone.
Dell’s venture into the smart phone interest is a smart move for the big-dogs at Dell. They see that cell phones are becoming nothing more than handheld computers and soon the most basic cell phone will be extinct. Nokia has known this for years and now we see even their most basic phones being replaced with new models that can access the Web, receive email, access chat programs and so on. The mobile computing craze is only going to get more intense. With the release of the Dell 3G NetBook, and now the new Dell mini smart phone, we see Dell setting up a good position to be on the cutting edge of the future consumer market.
Some are wondering why they will not be releasing this device in the United States right away, but the truth of the matter is that Dell needs to test a larger market. The cell phone providers in China and Brazil have double the subscribers of that in the US. This means that Dell would have a smaller market audience for the release, and since this is a shot in the dark for Dell they need to cover their ends as best as possible should the worst happen and people don’t like the Dell smart phone.
This is a huge undertaking for Dell and if we see the Mini 3 gain popularity overseas we will certainly see it here in the states as well. The only question that remains for the computer giant is: “When will the revenues start to accumulate for Dell as we see them venture into unexplored smart phone terrain?”
