Motorola Devour is a strange name for a smartphone. This one may be meant to scare off the other smartphones in its category. Will it have success? It is possible. Take a look at this upcoming smartphone in this short review article.
The Devour is shaped differently than other phones. Not in a bad way. The slider portion is covered on the ends by the keyboard. The screen slides inside the lower keyboard section. I like it. I am sure others will also. This phone has a setup similar to the Motorola Droid. It really seems like the little brother to the Droid and the price reflects this also.
The screen still uses the old LCD technology but it is of the capacitive touch variety. This makes this phone responsive but uses more energy than the newer AMOLED screens. It is sized at 3.1 inches when measured diagonally. It has the screen pixel rating set at 320 by 480. If you like to turn your phone on the side to view things better, the Motorola Devour has an accelerometer to do that also.
The keyboard is spacious and should not pose a problem to those with bigger fingers. It seems the side slider configuration on this phone is more solidly made than other forms of sliders. The D-Pad is located on the upper part of the screen, under the screen. The keyboard is the usual QWERTY style with four rows. The camera is a bit weak, but this is to be expected for what is probably going to be an entry-level phone. It is three megapixels and does not have autofocus. You can crop photos, geotag them and rotate them.
The big new about the Motorola Devour is the operating system. The Devour comes with the "raving popular" android system. This is the same operating system as its big brother Droid. This system can handle all your major social networks plus the major IM carriers. Google talk, yahoo, Windows messenger and AOL are all supported. You have all major email tasks handled. This is version 1.6, which is promised to be updated to the anticipated 2.1 shortly. If you lose your smartphone or happen to have it stolen, the android system can "wipe" your phone of all its information. This of course will include your personal bank account information and other sensitive things. This can all be done without the Devour actually being in your hands.
All the newest connectivity is included, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a microUSB connector. The microSD card slot is also included for absolutely phenomenal memory capacity. A 32 gigabyte microSD card can hold around 8000 songs, depending on the length of the song. That is 22 songs every day for a year without repeats.
No doubt you will like the two colors offered. It comes in black and silver. Many people like the fact that the Devour is easier to use than the Droid. This phone is slated to be sold for just over $99 dollars. No word if that price is with or without a rebate yet. The Devour will be out in March, 2010, about the middle of the month.
