HTC Desire

The HTC Desire was launched in the summer of 2010. It is powered by the Android operating system pioneered by Google and is a further development of the Nexus One, which was branded by Google though manufactured by HTC.

At the heart of the HTC beats a fast microprocessor developed by ARM and the Snapdragon. This little beast buzzes along at an amazing (at least by smartphone standards) 1 GHz, almost twice as fast as the processor found in most phones including the iPhone. The result is lightening fast response times, true multitasking and an incredibly smooth user experience.

The display is excellent. It uses Super LCD technology developed by Sony and the resolution appears even better than AMOLED.

The current version of the Android OS is 2.2, which is nicknamed Froyo. This offers increased speed over previous versions, improved browser capabilities, a better application launcher, the ability to use the phone for connecting other equipment such as a laptop to a 3G network though Wi-Fi or USB connectivity, and voice dialing using Bluetooth.

The HTC Desire comes in two styles. These are the HTC Desire Z and the HTC Desire HD. The principal difference between these phones is that the Desire Z has a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Although this is an extremely useful feature the downsides are that it increases the weight of the phone, which is also relatively thick. This is compensated for by the very good design of the keyboard, which is highly ergonomic.

The display is very bright with excellent colour rendition. Scrolling is also very fast. There is also an optical track pad on the front face of the phone, but the display is smaller than that found on the HTC HD which has a display with a diagonal dimension of 4.3 inches.

Between them, the Desire Z and the Desire HD offer everything you could wish for from a smartphone, but there are trade offs to be made. The one to choose depends on your priorities – slide out keyboard or larger display and slimmer phone.
