Google Android - The open-sourced Platform

There is no doubt that the Google Android mobile phone operating system has finally arrived. You can get it on almost any phone, and it even ships standard on many new, very cool mobile phones that have come out in recent months. But what makes Google Android a viable option? Isn’t it true that the Android program does not cost anything? If this is the case, than why aren’t there other operating systems out there that are better? Well, maybe Android is not considered the BEST, but it IS one of the most open-sourced, and that means something to today’s mobile phone community.

It is true that Android has a long way to go before it reaches the level of Apple mobile phone operating systems, as they dominate the market right now. But is it really the dream of Google to completely take over the mobile phone operating system industry, or are they just trying to get their foot in the door?

Google Android

To make a long story short, Google Android is giving us a more than capable OS on several high-end phones that would otherwise not be as open-sourced, and that, in itself, is something for Google to brag about. But then again, Google is no technological newbie either. Google is on the forefront of the communication revolution that is shaping our world right now, and in some ways, Google has this industry wrapped around it’s little finger.

Look at Google Maps? Is there anything comparable to that in the world right now? Sure, maybe there are expensive Gps programs, but can you easily download them to your website or Myspace page?  Google has something special with Android, and only time will tell how far it will really go. The sky might be the limit, but it will all depend on the mobile-phone buying public, and the question will be this one - How much is an open-sourced operating system really worth to them?

Only time and mobile phone sales will tell.
